At Blatherwycke Estate, farming is more than a tradition — it’s a responsibility to the land and future generations. Our approach to sustainable farming blends modern techniques with respect for nature, ensuring that every field, meadow, and herd contributes to a thriving environment.
By rotating crops, planting cover crops, and maintaining wildlife-friendly field margins, we create space for birds, bees, and other pollinators to flourish. Our rare White Park cattle graze in a way that naturally enriches the soil, while in the winter months they are sheltered and fed on haylage to protect both herd and habitat.
For us, sustainability is about balance: healthy soil, resilient ecosystems, and wholesome produce. Every step we take is designed to leave the land richer than we found it.
Blatherwycke Estate is proud to be part of the Countryside Stewardship scheme, which helps us care for the landscape in ways that benefit both people and wildlife. Through this programme, we’ve restored hedgerows, planted new trees, and created wider field margins to encourage biodiversity.
These efforts bring the countryside to life — providing shelter for songbirds, corridors for small mammals, and feeding grounds for pollinators. Beyond the ecological value, they also preserve the estate’s timeless beauty and character.
Countryside Stewardship is more than a government initiative here; it’s part of our ethos. It’s how we honour the estate’s history while shaping a greener, healthier future.
The landscape at Blatherwycke Estate is diverse and ever-changing, and thoughtful land management is what keeps it thriving. From farmland and woodland to wetlands and meadows, every area is carefully managed to balance productivity with conservation.
We give the soil time to rest, protect waterways from erosion, and ensure ancient woodlands are preserved through sensitive replanting and care. Buffer strips and wildlife corridors allow nature to move freely across the estate, while regular monitoring helps us adapt to new environmental challenges.
Our aim is simple: to create a living, working landscape that produces food, supports wildlife, and offers beauty and heritage for all to enjoy.
Roe, muntjac, and fallow deer are a natural part of the estate, but their numbers must be balanced to protect woodlands, crops, and young trees. Our deer management programme ensures that herds remain healthy and the wider landscape can flourish.
Through selective and humane culling, we prevent overgrazing and encourage natural regeneration. Venison from the estate is then carefully prepared in our certified game larder, offering a delicious and sustainable product that connects field to table.
Fencing, tree guards, and regular monitoring further protect sensitive habitats, ensuring our woodlands and plantations grow strong for the future. With this approach, we maintain harmony — preserving deer as part of our heritage while protecting the land they call home.
